Dr. West received an MPhil in Experimental Biology from Cambridge University on a Fulbright Scholarship and a medical degree (magna cum laude) from Harvard Medical School, where Dr. West also conducted research as a Howard Hughes Medical Student Fellow. His postdoctoral training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital Boston, MA, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center/ University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Dr. West joined Swedish Cancer Institute in late 2002 as a medical oncologist and lung cancer specialist. He also serves as Medical Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program and has a significant clinical interest as well in genitourinary oncology.
Dr. West has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed literature and has authored several book chapters. He serves as the Web Editor of JAMA Oncology and is on the editorial boards of Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Medicine, Clinical Lung Cancer, and Journal of Thoracic Disease, in addition to serving as an author of multiple lung cancer-related sections of UpToDate and as a reviewer for more than a dozen professional journals. Dr. West leads a wide range of clinical trials and has been actively involved with the SWOG Lung Cancer Committee as a Study Coordinator/Principal Investigator.
Dr. West founded and continues to serve as President of the nonprofit organization Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education (GRACE), a source of timely, free information for patients and caregivers dealing with cancer that currently receives over 50,000 visits per month from over 100 countries around the world. Looking toward future developments, Dr. West is working on how to integrate telemedicine and artificial intelligence technologies to raise the level of care across the diverse geographies of broad health care networks.
